What Can You Claim?
The CICA offer various compensation schemes but the most relevant involve compensation for injuries, compensation for loss of earnings and compensation for special expenses.
Compensation for injuries
Also known as a “tariff award” this type of compensation simply recognises the fact you’ve suffered an injury. It is called a “tariff” because the CICA have a list of injuries and a list of the compensation they pay for each one. They work from this “tariff” in calculating the amount you get.
Compensation for loss of earnings:
If you qualify for a “tariff award” and have been unable to work for longer then 28 weeks then the CICA will compensate you from the 29th week onwards.
Compensation for special expenses
It is possible as part of a claim to recover the costs incurred as a result of injuries suffered, for example, the cost of medical treatment or cost of care etc but the CICA will only pay this if you are not able to work for more than 28 weeks. If you do qualify then unlike earnings they’ll compensate you for them from the date of the injury itself.
